Ancestor to the Asiatic Mastiff, Bulldogs originated in the British Isles and were originally called British Bulldogs for their place of origin and their extraordinary courage they possessed while bull-baiting in the 1200s. Bulldogs today, while bred to be much less aggressive than their day scuffling with bulls, are dependable and protective and very good with children. This can be a stubborn and determined breed, but their love of human companionship and attention and will usually concede their persistent ways; for a treat or belly rub, that is. Because of the Bulldog’s short snout (which causes many Bulldogs to snore while sleeping), they do best indoors and are fairly inactive, but they do require a daily walk to fulfill their migrate instinct and avoid behavioral problems. This is also a good time to practice obedience training with your Bully to confirm who in your relationship is the leader. Because of the breed’s large head, which is a trademark characteristic for the Bulldog, most litters are delivered by cesarean section. A large rope over the nose and lots of wrinkles are also a traits that define the Bulldog breed, making that squishy, wrinkley face one only a mother; or father or child could love.
