Through selective breeding, the German Shepherd Dog is always, above all else, a working dog. The product of these working lines is a fiercely protective animal, that is loyal, courageous, and intelligent; making the German Shepherd an excellent choice for herding, police, search and rescue, and military work, as well as family protection and companionship. As a patient, watchful observer, the German Shepherd is also an ideal candidate for service work, including leading the blind. They are powerful, yet agile; noble, yet rugged and need plenty of exercise and attention to thrive and fulfill the many wonderful qualities of the breed. Since this is a “pack” breed, they will need firm guidance from an authority figure. It is recommended that formal obedience training, most famously known for Schutzhund, laying the necessary groundwork for an easy start to your relationship that will last a lifetime.
German Shepherds range in color; black and tan being the most popular, to sable and solid black. Most recently, German Shepherds can be found in solid white, which are now being referred to as the American White Shepherd. German Shepherd Dogs have three coat types: double coat, plush, and long haired, which unless brushed daily, will be a massive shedder. This, however, does not deter most from welcoming this handsome breed into their homes. As long as you are active and mentally stimulating your German Shepherd, this is a breed that will be a harmonious addition to your family.
