In England and Scotland in the early 1800s, hunting game was not only a practical way of obtaining food, but an enjoyable sport as well. The medium-sized Golden Retriever was a desirable breed for both waterfowl and upland game. Hunters needed a dog that was strong and a good swimmer, one that could withstand the cold weather and fend through heavy vegetation. Golden Retrievers are descendants derived from a Tweed Water Spaniel and the lighter build of the Newfoundland and Irish Setter. The American Kennel Club registered the first Golden Retriever in November 1925, previous to this there were registered Retrievers, however with little description.
Because of their love of fetching, Golden Retrievers are still very successful in field trials, hunting, and obedience. Goldens are loving and playful making them a popular family pet. They have few behavioral issues and are excellent with children and those with special needs. The coat of the Goldens is dense and water-repellent and traditionally in a medium yellow-gold color, yet ranges from an almost white English Creme to an Irish Setter red. The temperament of Golden Retrievers is always loyal and affectionate and the time spent together is incredibly rewarding.
